A few weeks ago Teresa Bell resigned from the Australian Poetry Centre and I was appointed Acting Director. I am thrilled to accept the position, taking over from Teresa, who was absolutely inspiring and a pleasure to work with. She achieved so much and achieved it in such a positive, collaborative manner with great integrity. I think poetry is undervalued in Australia, as an art form, and my aim is to raise the profile of poetry, poets and the Centre. Here are a few things I have initiated to help in this regard:
The Business of Poetry: The Australian Poetry Centre has initiated an innovative collaboration with engineering giant, Siemens. Siemens recently employed a 'poet' to work with them in order to more succinctly convey its message of working towards a sustainable future. This initiative will hopefully pave the way for more poets to connect with more businesses around the country and break down the barriers between the corporate and creative sectors.
Nothing Rhymes with RRR: The APC produces a poetry podcast with RRR with each one connecting a different aspect of society with poetry. We have done children, food, fashion and the next one is drugs. In our food/poetry podcast, we interviewed restauranteur, Guy Grossi, about the connection between food and poetry and presened an Iron Chef Haiku competition between Iron Poets Myron Lysenko and Matt Hetherington.
The L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival: The APC has connected with the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival for our fashion/poetry podcast. An initiative which has come out of this collaboration is producing designer poetry book bags which will be designed and made by some of Australia's leading designers and distributed during the Fashion Festival next March.
The Cafe Poet Program: The APC has placed more than 25 poets in cafes all over Australia. The idea is that the poets sit as 'poet in residence' in the cafe and write in return for complimentary tea and coffee. The poets then organise events, readings, writers groups and any other initiatives they can think of to help promote them, their work, the cafe and the Australian Poetry Centre. The program began in Feb 2009 and continues to grow all around the country.
